Nearby Winter Ski and Snow Fun

With the D.C. area getting its first 1”+ of snow in over two years this week, here’s a list of great places to ski and enjoy snow sports nearby. If you prefer to stay closer to home, don’t miss great sledding hills like the lawn at the U.S. Capitol, Fort Reno Park, and Fort Dupont Park. Happy snowy days!

Seven Springs
Distance from D.C.: 3 hrs., 30 min.

With lots of runs from bunny slopes to black diamonds, Seven Springs is a must-visit for winter sports loving families. Once you’ve had enough of the outdoors, head inside for bowling, indoor mini golf, swimming, axe throwing and more.

Whitetail
Distance from D.C.: 1 hr., 40 min.

Whitetail has been open for skiing since 1991. There are lots of options, from those who are expert skiers to first-timers (there’s a great guide here for beginner skiers and snow boarders). There are snow tubing and night skiing options as well.

Massanutten Resort
Distance from D.C.: 2 hrs., 30 min.

Avid skiers will be pleased to know that this nearby resort is hosting a 2024 Ski Southeast/Massanutten Resort Summit February 9-11. There will be (naturally) lots of skiing, an après ski party with drinks and appetizers, and more.

Wisp Resort
Distance from D.C.: 3 hrs.

Maryland’s Wisp Resort offers skiing, snow tubing, and even a mountain coaster. The Mountain Coaster at Wisp Resort is a combination alpine slide and roller coaster that runs on a 1,300-foot uphill track and 3,500-foot downhill track. There are lots of options to warm up with a hot coffee or cocoa too.

Liberty Mountain
Distance from D.C.: 1 hr., 30 min.

A quick ride up to Liberty Mountain Resort in Fairfield, Penn. is a great option for first time skiers and snowboarders. Group and private lessons are available. If you end up liking Liberty enough to become a regular, passholders get special deals on food.
