As most Washingtonians know, when the calendar flips to March, the unofficial start to spring is here. Enjoy lots of options in the performing arts, visual arts, family events, and of course celebrate Women’s History Month too. Happy weekend!

See The Book of Mormon at The National Theatre
The musical comedy “The Book of Mormon” follows the adventure of a mismatched pair of missionaries whose assignment was to spread the Good Word. It will be at the National Theatre now through March 17. The New York Times calls The Book of Mormon “the best musical of this century.” More information on tickets can be found here.

Jam with Joe Sumner at Wolf Trap
Wolf Trap will host musician Joe Sumner (whose dad is Sting) Friday at 7:30 p.m. His eclectic blend of rock and pop comes to The Barns as part of his debut solo album called “Sunshine in the Night.” Variety called the album “a humdinger loaded with chamber pop ditties and swirling, synth-y power ballads.” More information on the concert can be found here.

Awesome Con Comes to the Convention Center

The annual celebration of all things comics, science and technology, TV and film, custom art, and more begins Friday and lasts through the weekend. This year, Awesome Con will welcome headliners like Hayden Christensen, Ming-Na Wen, Rosario Dawson and more. The convention will feature hours of programming including hosting panels, signings, a cosplay competition and photo opportunities. More information on the event can be found here.

Catch the Last Weekend of “Where We Belong” at the Folger Theatre
Folger Theatre’s production of the solo show “Where We Belong” ends this weekend. The show is written and performed by Mohegan theater-maker Madeline Sayet and directed by Mei Ann Teo. Ladysmith Black Mambazo Heads to The Strathmore

Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s music is deeply rooted in South African musical traditions. Their concert at The Music Center at Strathmore Friday evening will allow the group’s rich harmonies and a capella performances to shine. A Women’s History Month Festival will be at The National Portrait Gallery
Visit the Portrait Gallery Saturday for their Women’s History Month Festival at the Kogod Courtyard. Check out the museum’s newest portraits of famous women, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Oprah, Beyoncé and more. There will be performances from The Washington Ballet, scavenger hunts, stories and additional activities offered. The event is free, but registration is encouraged—you can do so here.

Celebrate International Women’s Day at the NMWA
The National Museum of Women in the Arts is hosting a celebration Friday in honor of International Women’s Day. Enjoy spotlight conversations, yoga in the Great Hall, keynote speakers, a flash tattoo station, and more. Registration is required for most events. Enjoy an Exclusive Dinner with Acclaimed Irish Chef
To celebrate Irish Heritage Month, The Dupont Circle Hotel is hosting Irish chef Richard Corrigan for a four-day dining experience at the hotel’s restaurant, The Pembroke. Now through March 9, Chef Corrigan is taking over dinner service at the restaurant, showcasing a four-course tasting menu. More information on the experience can be found here.

Chill at The Taste of Iceland
The Taste of Iceland is on tour and stopping in the District March 8 and 9. During the two-day extravaganza, guests can transport themselves to Iceland with food, music, design, and more. The Dupont Underground Opens “Thoughts, Questions and Shit to Say”
As part of Women’s History Month, The Dupont Underground is opening an exhibit featuring multiple forms of visual art to celebrate the D.C. area’s female artists’ narratives. The exhibit, called “Thoughts, Questions and Shit to Say,” features over 20 local female artists and their sculptures, paintings, and other forms of art. Gerrard Street Kitchen Celebrates The Oscars

In honor of the Oscars this weekend, Gerrard Street Kitchen in The Darcy Hotel is inviting guests for a curated selection of cocktails inspired by nominated films. Cathedral Choral Society Explores Relationship Between Sound and Space
Don’t miss “Sonic Boom: Music of Bruckner, Esmail and Gabrieli” at Washington National Cathedral Sunday afternoon. The concert explores the “sonic boom,” which is interplay among architecture, music and distance.
