April 2024 Auction Block


April’s auction report brings a blend of sales. Noteworthy mentions include  a Christian Dior newspaper print dress sold for over $23,000 and a sapphire and diamond ring that sold for over $300,000 the estimated price. 

Bonhams 

Christian Dior Newspaper Print Dress 

Sold for: $23,040  

From creative director John Galliano, a similar dress was seen on Sex and the City. The dress was auctioned in good condition, despite a hole three inches above the front hemline and discoloration throughout from age. The dress is 100 percent silk jersey newspaper print. There is also a gold tone Christian Dior logo strap detail. 


Doyle 

Yolande Ardissone Oil on Canvas 

 

Estimate: $2,000-$3,000 

Sold for: $5,120 

This oil on canvas was auctioned in good condition. Signed “Ardissone (II),” it measures 23 ¾ x 28 ¾ inches and its frame dimensions measure 34 x 39 inches. Yolande Ardissone, 96, is a French painter who studied at the Beaux-Arts and the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. 


Christie’s 

No Reserve Sapphire and Diamond Ring 

Estimate: $300,000-$500,000 

Sold for: $856,800 

This 8.19 carat, cushion mixed-cut sapphire, diamond and platinum ring sold for over $300,000 its estimate. The diamonds are two trapezoid-shaped gems with a weight of 1.2 to 1.4 carats. The ring measures a U.S. size 4. 


The Potomack Company  

Antique Silver Ladies’ Watch with Platinum and Diamond Chain 

 

Estimate: $2,000-$3,000 

Sold for: $7,500 

This antique piece features 34 old mine and old European cut diamonds, and the back of the watch includes 31 diamonds forming a border. There are 18 interior diamonds, one center diamond and six additional surrounding diamonds. Its gross weight is approximately 25.48 grams. 


 Freemans | Hindman  

A Chinese Reverse-Painted Mirror of Pheasants and Peonies 

This piece was property from the collection of William L. Bernhard and Catherine Cahill. The painting on the mirror is in overall good condition and had a few scattered small losses to the decoration. The back of the frame was deemed fragile.
