Weekend Roundup: Holiday Concerts Fill the City with Cheer


This weekend, you have your pick of holiday concerts! Mount Vernon is also offering their popular “Mount Vernon by Candlelight” series too. Happy holidays!

See L’Opera Comique de Washington’s ‘Winter Serenade’
Celebrate the warmth and joy of the season with L’Opera Comique de Washington. The festive program will feature carols and soaring arias. Expect lots of seasonal favorites intertwined with operatic gems too. The evening will run from 7:30 to 10 p.m. on Friday evening. More information can be found here.

The National Symphony Orchestra Performs Handel’s ‘Messiah’

This weekend only, the National Symphony Orchestra will be performing Handel’s “Messiah” per holiday tradition. Ton Koopman will conduct the concert, which will feature four gifted singers and the University of Maryland Concert Choir. Shows run December 18 through the 21. Catch the Last Weekend of The Washington Chorus’s ‘A Candlelight Christmas’
Another holiday tradition, The Washington Chorus’s “A Candlelight Christmas” returns for its 16th year. Saturday and Sunday’s shows are at The Kennedy Center with lots of beloved carols to bring the joy of the holiday season to life. There will be a 200-voice chorus, brass, organs and special guests. The National Chamber Ensemble to Bring ‘Holiday Cheer’
The National Chamber Ensemble will be at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington for their Holiday Cheer show on Saturday evening. The performance will include Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” selections from “The Nutcracker,” and works from Vivaldi and Strauss, among others. More information on the event can be found here.

See Mount Vernon by Candlelight
This Friday evening, enjoy a candlelit guided tour and learn about holiday traditions at Mount Vernon. The first and second floors of Washington’s mansion are open during the event, which will also feature talks about the build-up to the American Revolution as the country gears up for the year-long celebration of America’s 250th birthday. If you can’t make Friday, December 22 and 23 are also Mount Vernon by Candlelight days. More information on the event can be found here.

A Christmas Concert Will Be at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church on Saturday
The annual Mt. Zion Christmas concert will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. The music ministry spends months prepping for this special season, and the concert is free, however registration is required to attend. Afterward, there will be refreshments and fellowship. Guests can reserve a seat here.

Washington Master Chorale’s ‘Thine Own Sweet Light’ is at St. Ann’s

Don’t miss another holiday concert at St. Ann’s Catholic Church on Friday evening and Church of the Epiphany Sunday evening. The Washington Master Chorale will be performing “Thine Own Sweet Light,” which will feature the sound of the 50 voice a cappella chorus. More information on the event can be found here.
