Hoyas Defeat Rutgers in Final Seconds (photos)

Otto Porter scored the final six points helping the 10th ranked Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team avoid an upset by the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in a defensive battle at the Verizon Center on Saturday, January 21, 2012. The Hoyas improved their record to 16-3. Porter’s pair of free throws with 8.5 seconds left sealed the victory. The Hoyas made only 12 field goals, which is tied for the fewest in a college basketball victory this season. The Scarlet Knights had one final chance, but freshman guard Eli Carter’s jumper hit the back of the rim and bounced out as a time expired. The Chinese-American community celebrated the Year of the Dragon with a parade that attracted thousands to the Chinatown neighborhood of Washington DC. The celebration, which took place on Sunday, January 29, 2012, included a dragon dance, a lion dance, kung fu demonstrations and the lighting of a giant firecracker. The Music Center at Strathmore was host to a moving celebration in honor of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 16, 2012. The highlight of the program was Dr. King himself, in the guise of Mr. Gregg Riley, a talented actor and a dead ringer for the noted civil rights leader. Riley, who began his oration offstage in a familiar baritone, had many in the packed house of nearly 2000 people convinced they were listening to a recording of Dr. King’s voice. When Riley, as King, did walk onstage, the audience at first seemed stunned into silence as if seeing a ghost, only to rise up to the strength of Dr. Kings powerful words, and end with a standing ovation for Riley’s riveting performance.

The event was presented by Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Committee.

Let’s Cheer! Hundreds compete at the Live! DC Cheer and Dance Competion (photos)

What competitive activity combines precision dance, calisthenics, gymnastics, aesthetics, strength, teamwork, structural engineering, rhythm and pure fun? Hundreds of competitors from Virginia to Pennsylvania gathered on January 7-8, 2012 for the 5th annual Live! DC regional cheerleading and dance competition at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in the District. Participating teams competed in 5 class levels in a number of categories. The event was sponsored by The JAM brands (Louisville KY) which provides products and services for the cheerleading and dance industry. Successful teams will compete in the US Finals in Virginia Beach on May 5-6. It will be loud.

National Menorah is Lit for Hanukkah (photos)

A special lighting ceremony took place for the National Hanukkah Menorah, the world’s largest, on the Ellipse, just across from the White House on the first night of the eight-day Jewish holiday. The first candle was lit on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 by special guest, Office of Management and Budget Director Jacob Lew. “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band, and “The Three Cantors” performed. The national menorah lighting dates to 1979 when Jimmy Carter was president. Hanukkah celebrates the Jewish Maccabees’ military victory over Syrian oppression more than two-thousand years ago. A candle is lit each night of the eight-day celebration, commemorating the miracle of one day’s supply of oil lasting a full eight days in the lamp following the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Santarchy Invades DC (photos)

If you saw dozens of Santas parading around the District on Saturday, Dec. 17, you probably were witness to Santarchy. This is an annual Christmas event held in major cities around the world where thousands of Santas visit major sites and spread their holiday cheer. Organizers describe Santarchy as “a non-profit, non-political, non-religious & non-sensical celebration of holiday cheer, goodwill, and fun.” They are also quick to add that they are not protestors. and will not be occupying anyting except the North Pole. Wreaths Across America Honors Deceased Veterans at Arlington National Cemetery (photos)

Wreaths Across America volunteers laid over 90,000 wreaths on Saturday, December 10, 2011 to honor veterans buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Founded in 1992 by wreath-maker Morrill Worcester of Harrington, Maine, the event helps communities recognize and remember the sacrifices of those who have served in America’s armed forces. Organizers said 15,000 people joined the effort at Arlington.

Capitol Tree Lighting Ceremony (photos)

The 47th Capitol Christmas tree was lit up in a ceremony on the West Lawn of the US Capitol on Tuesday, December 6, 2011. The 63 foot Sierra white fir from California’s Stanislaus National Forest was decorated with more than 10,000 LED lights and some 2,000 handmade ornaments from the State of California.
